A WELL-KNOWN British chocolate brand has announced it s shutting all its retail sites permanently – including the Chester city centre store and the café at Cheshire Oaks. Thorntons, which was founded in 1911, has announced via its website it will be closing its retail estate, citing the ongoing Covid pandemic and its associated lockdowns, as well as a shift in customers shopping habits to online. The closure of the 61 Thorntons sites include the shop on Eastgate Street, Chester, as well as the Thorntons Café on the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet. Both sites have been closed during the current Covid lockdown. On its website, Thorntons has said: Like many companies, we have been operating for a long time in a tough and challenging retail environment. We have been committed to transforming and growing a successful Thorntons retail estate; this has included significant investments to open new format stores and cafes and ensuring we had stores in the right locations.
