Lee, que sirvió de epicentro para las protestas organizadas en 2017 por supremacistas blancos y colectivos de ultraderecha, y que desembocó en el asesinato de la contramanifestante Heather Heyer. Junto al monumento a Lee también se ha retirado de la vía pública otra figura del general Thomas Stonewall Jackson y otra en la que se representa a la indígena Sacagawea junto a los exploradores Mariwether Lewis y William Clark y que había sido criticada por mostrar a la mujer arrodillada tras los dos hombres, en una postura erguida y orgullosa, según recoge el medio ABC News.
