Bill gives police dogs injured on duty the services of EMT, ambulance

PROVIDENCE A bill in the R.I. House would allow a law enforcement dog injured on duty to be taken by ambulance to a veterinary hospital if the ambulance isn’t needed for a human. The addition to the Animal Care section of state law was introduced last year by R.I. Rep. David A. Bennett, whose district covers parts of Cranston and Warwick. The bill expired in the COVID-shortened legislative season of 2020, Bennett said, and he reintroduced it on Monday. It was referred to the House Health, Education & Welfare Committee. The measure defines police dogs as dogs assisting a law-enforcement or military entity with such tasks as search and rescue, detecting accelerants in the aftermath of a fire, finding drugs and sweeping for bombs.

Latanowich to be tried on Cape Cod after judge rejects change of venue

BARNSTABLE The trial for the man accused of killing Yarmouth police Sgt. Sean Gannon will be held in Barnstable Superior Court, a judge ruled last week.  Thomas Latanowich is facing a murder charge for allegedly shooting Gannon and his K-9 partner, Nero, while the officer was serving an arrest warrant for Latanowich in Marstons Mills in 2018. Latanowich s attorney, Joseph Krowski, requested the trial be moved to an off-Cape court, arguing that it was impossible to get an impartial trial on Cape Cod.  Krowski contends there is such an overwhelmingly negative feeling in the community about his client that the court should move the trial to a different part of the state. He bolstered his argument by citing thousands of pages of news articles, photographs, opinion pieces, and social media posts about Gannon’s death.
