But amid a national push for police accountability, critics now are questioning the often-secret actions of the U.S. Marshals Service, including why and how it oversaw the operation that resulted in Smith s death. The reason you don t know much about the Marshals Service is that s the way they operate, said Thomas Heffelfinger, former U.S. attorney for Minnesota. The secrecy under which they operate is to some degree consistent with their mission, which is done much more effectively if done quietly.
Former MN U-S Attorney on upcoming Chauvin trial

Jury selection in the trial for former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin is set to begin Monday. The main part of the trial is expected to start near the end of the month. Former U-S Attorney for Minnesota Thomas Heffelfinger says he’ll be watching for three key things:
“The videotape, both the citizen observer and the officer-worn videotape that should be very telling in this case.”
Heffelfinger says what doctors say about George Floyd’s cause of death and police use of force guidelines at the time of Floyd’s killing will also be key in the trial. Chauvin and three other former officers are charged in Floyd’s death in south Minneapolis in May.
