criticize restaurant and whatnot, some people are calling it the surcharge obnoxious and tacky. but what the owners say is if you don t like the 3% surcharge, which is going to help pay for the hmo s for our employees, just take it out of the tip. take the money out of the tip. let s just leave charles quotes nancy pelosi. this kind of sums it up in my mind. think of an economy where people could be an artist or photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance. that s the idyllic new world of obamacare. do you give let us know what you think. do you give the restaurant credit for being open and honest? it s clearly where the charge is coming from. do you want to see the reason why? sure. they re being honest with people. look, this is costing us more, so we have to or else they ll lose their job because people will say, another 3% on top of that.
but do we want doctors across the country to be working like that saying the government is going to make sure an insurance company pays you. don t worry about it. the same government that can t fix a website? such a good point. you re worried about the people who have the card, they come in with strep throat and say got to have your help on this and you re not in that network. that s what you ve been talking about for a couple of years. now it s going to hit the fan on thursday. because it s the old-style medicine from the 19 # 1990 s, meaning h.m.o.-type insurance where there s very few doctors in the network. even if you get to see me, the specialist i m used to referring to may not be accepting insurance. all boils down to the concern about quality of care medicine. the real secret here is and i wrote about this in the wall street journal, it takes me time to figure out what the problem is. i had one patient came in with a rash that was not revealing, did not impress me. as
i m not getting much with my money. if they don t sign up, the law will go into the death spiral. we re getting people in high risk and more expensive and that s not sustainable for the law. jon: and the occasions are that that s only happening, that the older and sicker americans are signing up. what about, you know, the scope of the choices here? i mean, that s all being narrowed, right? prices are going up but the choices that you have in terms of who your doctor is, which hospitals you can go to, those are all getting squeezed. there s a reason to that, because the premise of the will you is to bring in millions more who have never had coverage and to expand the kind of benefits that all people get. that s really expensive and the only way to pay for that is two ways. to bring young folks in who are healthy and don t cost the insurance companies a lot of money but the second and more important way is to control costs and to do that, look the way the h.m.o. s control cost.
and that s the real problem. you know, the defenders of the law say and they re right the people have lost coverage or lost their doctors, have lost their networks for years. not all of this is the fault of obamacare. that s true enough. the problem is that obama and the democrats own the entire field of health care now, and obamacare is turning health care into a mass hmo. and so now whether there s a direct cause or not, people who have any problems and you see this in these polls people who have any problems in their health care attribute it to obamacare. and i don t think that s good news for these guys. jon: all right. well, the 16-day blitz is over. we ll see where the sign-up numbers increase much at all. jonah goldberg, nina easton, thank you both. thank you. jenna: another big story, fiery comments from ukraine s president. in a televised interview essentially telling the west to mind its own business and to stop intervening in what he calls ukraine s internal affair
