a year. they ve bip in crimea since 2014, and u.s. officials have pretty candidly and sometimes publicly suggested they don t think that s possible. they don t think crimea is something that can be returned to ukraine in the short-term. of course they think crimea is part of ukraine and think it should go back to kyiv s control eventually, but it s hard to see that happening anytime soon. and let s be clear, ali, there is no talk of peace. president biden did say yesterday how there s been no signals whatsoever from moscow they want to engage in ending this war and coming to the negotiating table. so there are a lot of uncertain questions, unanswered questions out there even as president biden and his nato allies have had such a display of unity here in europe in recent days. and it s even as they have skepticism how crimea can come back into the hold for kyiv. he still said yesterday, president biden, one country can t seize territory by force, of course stating the obvious there, b
retired lieutenant colonel james reese. we heard from the u.s. ambassador to return, jon huntsman. he says it s highly unlikely the president will reference the annexation of crimea. but this president is an unpredictable negotiator. how important is crimea in these talks? it s not as important as i think people think it should be. i believe what the ambassador said. president trump believes this happened the last administration. he complains by the a lot. i would like to see him let that go. but i don t think, to be candid with you, i don t think there is anything we are going to do about the crimea issue. we need to find other things we can talk about because i don t think crimea is on the table.
part of the six-party process on north korea. the russians are part of the syria process. so i think we do need to kind of work with the russians on these international issues. and i think it s also important that we have a kind of grander strategy, if you will, where we re working with china and other countries. we need russia to understand that they are going to be diplomatically limited by what they have done in ukraine. and by the way, i don t think crimea is going to really help russia. i think it gives them a kind of surge of adrenaline. many russian nationalists are very happy with this today. but the underlying problems in russia are economic, their failure to move beyond oil and gas production. so they have a lot of problems coming down the road. and crimea is not going to solve them for them. all right. ambassador christopher hill, thank you for your time. thank you. it s a weather forecast that could send shivers across the globe. but why is this new climate change rep
