LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) Pappy Van Winkle wasnât always the most sought-after bourbon in the world.
In fact, the Van Winkle family would have faded from the distilling business altogether were it not for third-generation proprietor Julian Van Winkle IIIâs toiling in the 1980s and 1990s to revive his grandfatherâs legacy.
âThe thing you learn is that Julian inherited this failing business essentially in 1981, when his father died, and for 15 or 16 years he couldnât get anybody to buy this stuff,â said author and ESPN senior writer Wright Thompson.
âPAPPYLAND: A Story of Family, Fine Bourbon, and the Things That Lastâ,â details the history of Louisville s Van Winkle family in the bourbon distilling business.
