First US case of more infectious ‘double mutant’ covid variant that emerged in India is identified in California
Researchers at Stanford University confirmed what is believed to be the first U.S. case of a coronavirus variant that emerged in India
Indian authorities have referred to it as a double mutant because it has two mutations on parts of the virus that help it hook onto our cells
The variant was linked to between 15% and 20% of samples sequenced from India s Maharashtra state, which has seen a 50% spike in cases in the last week
Health experts believe the variant spreads more rapidly, but there is no evidence to suggest that it evades vaccines antibodies more easily

After a difficult year of battling Covid-19, we are now beginning to see the rollout of many effective vaccines across the world, including the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, which I helped to develop. It’s therefore to be expected that people might begin to ask, “When will life return to normal?”
The main indication of this will be when the pressure begins to ease on public health systems. So far, the signs are good as the Oxford/AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Novavax, Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines all show almost complete protection against hospitalisation, even in countries with new variants.
