GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Guest houses and other accommodation establishments in the Garden Route have been crippled by booking cancellations since the region was declared a Covid-19 hotspot.
A survey conducted by George, Wilderness and Uniondale Tourism found that a significant number of holidaymakers have cancelled their bookings following the announcement of beach closures in the Garden Route last Monday night, said tourism manager Joan Shaw.

The closure of the Garden Route beaches had a terrible knock-on effect on owners of holiday accommodation, with 477 cancellations in the first 14 hours after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement just for booking platform NightsBridge.
When NightsBridge sent out a supplementary survey to assess the impact of the beach closures on its clients’ businesses to 629 respondents, 162 of the 189 that responded reported cancellations. CAPE TOWN – The Democratic Alliance (DA) remains hopeful that judgement on a challenge to the beach ban will be handed down in the next few days.
The party challenged the decision to close Garden Route beaches in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.
Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the closure as one of the intensified measures to address the spread of COVID-19.

A survey of guesthouses on the Garden Route paints a grim picture for the tourism sector in the region.

The questionnaire was carried out by online accommodation booking system provider, NightsBridge.
CEO Theresa Emerick says they sent the survey to 629 of their clients in the Garden Route asking whether they had experienced cancellations or postponements.
