season in the nation s history. wyre davies reports from the city of kelowna in british colombia, where a team of 500 firefighters have been in action. the devastating wildfires of the last week, more than 1,000 in total, have been some of the worst in canada s history. firefighting services stretched to the limit, huge swathes of land consumed by flames and thousands fleeing for their lives. there s a fire right behind our house now. among those evacuated in haste and chaos from the lakeside town of kelowna was local businessman todd ramsay. now safe with his family and pets in vancouver, he described how one of the region s biggest lakes was no barrier to the blaze. nobody thought that the fire would actuallyjump across the lake. but we re sitting there on our deck and we could hear what sounded like hail.
one of my detectives, patti varrone, went over to denny, whispered in his ear. and denny came over to me and said, a twin engine plane has crashed into one of the twin towers. there s a pretty bad fire. they don t know how bad it is yet. and i said, well, denny, we ve gotta head right down there. and he said, yeah, of course. [sirens wailing] - there s a fire in the building right now. huge smoke pouring out of it. - i was on east river drive and i could actually see it, and it looked to me like it was a lot of smoke for a small plane. - there was additional debris sort of raining down. - i rushed down there, and we began to get the reports. it started to sound worse and worse. - i can t imagine what the inside of that building looks like. - got there very quickly. went through the windows that already blown out. when i got in there, the chief said to me, boss, it wasn t a small plane, it was a commercial airliner and we can t put the fire out. we re gonna just try to get as
about it. i was able to move around. i was wearing clothing, obviousl. y some protective. i had a wet drenched tower anound my around my mouth so i wouldn t be inhaling too much smokd e. you know, i ve had some disaster preparation, training and stuff, somoke somef that stuff kicked in and i was able to move around and stay lo w and, you know, a lot of the basics when there s a fire, you should do procedures and now you re returning with people and just watching the devastation. what have people said as they ve seen now their homes completely burned? you know what? i talk to a lot of people, some some have made it back. and once you make it into the house like you said, the greatest build out is just the grid has been down. the communicatioommunican is all know that includes internet wipe by cell service. so we haven t been able to really touch base with a lot of people that make back into i.
