TGA: Death of woman after AstraZeneca vaccine an atypical case 17/04/2021|5min
Head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration John Skerritt says the death of a 48-year-old woman which is likely linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine was an atypical case.
The New South Wales woman who had diabetes was taken to hospital with blood clots and a low platelet count four days after receiving the vaccine.
She was vaccinated prior to the updated health advice for Australians under 50 to wait until the Pfizer vaccine is available instead.
“The case was particularly complicated to make a call on because the lady had a number of underlying medical conditions,” he said.
TGA: No conclusive evidence of ‘cause and effect’ on AstraZeneca clotting issue17/03/2021|8min
Head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration John Skerritt says there is currently no conclusive evidence of a “cause and effect” with the clotting issue surrounding the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Dr Skerritt responded to concerns which recently emerged after multiple European countries halted the distribution of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine over blood clotting concerns.
Dr Skerritt said the European Medicines Agency is “firm with us” despite the number of European countries which have paused the rollout of the vaccine.
“We’re obviously waiting to see if there’s any further information, but at this stage we don’t believe there’s conclusive evidence of cause and effect with the clotting issue.
