As a wine lover, I want to help introduce young and seasoned brands to open-minded consumers nationwide. Black-owned wine brands and vineyards offer extensive wine collections, so selecting just one to highlight from each brand makes me want to binge shop their entire catalog… Don’t tell my husband! I’ve rounded up a mix of red, white, and sparkling options from some of my favorite Black winemakers, all available to order online from retailers like Drizly. Cheers!

The Wine Press: News from Napa Valley and beyond

Bill Davies’ new wines Bill Davies, drawing on his family history as part of the Schramsberg winery, has launched a new line of wines. Davies, the son of Jack and Jamie Davies who founded Schramsberg in the mid-1960s, makes Billy D, and Ramble wines sourced from Northern California vineyards at a custom-crush facility. Billy D wines include Mountain Barbera, French Colombard and Daydreamer Rosé. The logo, a billy goat, invokes Davies’s dedication to bucking old trends while creating new ones. Ramble features lower-alcohol offerings with certified organic fruit from 70-100-year-old dry-farmed vines. The wines come in 750ml, using ultra-light glass and a plant-based, fully recyclable cork. Ramble includes Chenin Blanc, Valdiguié Rosé and Carignan bottlings from 2019. Petite Sirah, Charbono, and Barbera were crushed and fermented in 2020 for future release.

Local winemaker featured at International Winemakers Summit

The summit honors contributions of diverse winemakers around the world –Winemaking is a centuries-old profession originating in Old World France and yet, in 2021 little is still known about the rapidly increasing growth of diversity in the industry. With an estimated 80,000 wineries worldwide, the US is 4th in the world in wine production. Often absent from the narrative are the independently run, Black-owned wineries with roots dating back as far as the early 1940’s with John June Lewis, Sr. of Virginia. Serving as a vehicle to further increase awareness of the diversity in the wine industry, Urban Connoisseurs is partnering with Uncorked & Cultured a lifestyle media platform, to host the inaugural 2021 International Winemakers Summit (IWS), a virtual 3-day event highlighting some of the world’s most esteemed winemakers of African descent.
