Now representatives of the candidates and of all the radio and Television Networks have agreed on these rules neither candidate will make an Opening Statement or a closing summation, each will be questioned in turn, each will have an opportunity to comment upon the answer of the other, each reporter will ask only one question in turn. It was 1972, to a plot 30 in the morning when George Mcgovern delivered his acceptance speech. A few months later, he would lose badly to president Richard Nixon. Tonight, the candidacy and legacy of George Mcgovern. We are live from the mcgovern museum in mitchell, south dakota. Joining us is provincial author scott farris. It was 2 30 when he delivered the acceptance speech in miami. Why . It was emblematic of the whole Mcgovern Campaign, which was it was an insurgent campaign run against the establishment. What happened was, as you heard from senator mcgovern, he was very strong on the issue of vietnam. One of the things about senator government senator mcgovern as one of the most influential who ran for the presidency who was not successful, he went after the vietnam issue. He spoke about that war in ways no patinkin that had ever spoken about war before. No president president ial candidate had ever spoken about war before. To think about what i think its core dialectic was. The tension between democracy and efficiency. These were both ideals that people from a Broad Spectrum of political backgrounds in the progressive era believed were important. And they believed they were not incompatible, but you can see some ways in which they were fundamentally at some tension. So again, throughout class today be thinking about democracy versus efficiency. So the central question for historians of the early 20th century what is progressivism . A famous article that came out in 1982 was entitled in search of progressism, which i think aptly summed up the way that the historians were rummaging around, knowing that the progressive era existed but quibbling about what counted as progressive his. Who counted, when it started. Some people limit only to the Political Party that it was named for. Others define it much more broadly. So for me in this class this is how im going to define progressivism. In the broadest sense,
