BACK IN 1869, when the Suez Canal was about to open, the
ruler of Egypt invited Giuseppe Verdi to compose a work heralding
the new mechanical marvel. Verdi was uninspired by the idea of immortalizing the unprecedented
sea link between the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Suez, but he
proposed an alternative: an opera set in the glory days of ancient
Egypt.

Theodore Lambrinos, Baritone With a Zest for the Road, Dies at 85
Mr. Lambrinos sang performances at the Metropolitan Opera and was a stalwart of New York Grand Opera. He died of Covid-related pneumonia.
