From the time I got to know Khehla Mthembu – or Bra K or Comrade President – he was always an affable person. He personified humanity and gave it a real face. Forever approachable and welcoming, he wore an attitude of “How can we help?” – in other words, how can we help to lessen the burden on you.
This titan of the Black Consciousness movement perceptively knew throughout his life that black people as a whole were still bruised by the hardships of life. That the yoke of poverty, disease, indignity and negating conditions made us walk with a limp. It made us lose our rectitude and the posture that was meant to exude the pride of a free people.
