UC San Diego students move in amid housing crunch

Students at UC San Diego are spending the week moving into dorms and apartments ahead of the start of classes, while the waiting list for on-campus housing remains above 700.

UCSD s foreign enrollment plummets, but the campus is optimistic about future

Print For the first time in nearly 20 years, UC San Diego has experienced a big drop in foreign students, who are prized for their brainpower and the fact that they pay twice as much in tuition as California residents, helping balance the school’s budget. Newly-released figures show that UCSD had 8,451 foreigners last fall, down nearly 400 from the previous year. Campus officials on Tuesday described the decline as a temporary down draft caused by coronavirus-related travel and visa restrictions, and noted that UCSD’s overall enrollment rose to a record 39,576 students in fall 2020. The school also is preparing for immense post-pandemic growth. Construction began this week on a $565 million village that will house 2,000 students, many whom will live in a 21-story tower that will be among the tallest college residential halls in the western U.S.
