Editorial: Saying the quiet part loud: the Police Bill puts the class war out in the open

Enter your keywords Editorial: Saying the quiet part loud: the Police Bill puts the class war out in the open People in Parliament Square, London, taking part in a demonstration against THERE is a fearful symmetry between the revelations that former Tory minister Norman Tebbitt relied on information provided by police spies and the purposes of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill presently going through Parliament. Lord Tebbit, as he is now styled, was among Margaret Thatcher’s most hard-line ministers. His enduring trait is an open and unshakeable adherence to a set of extraordinarily reactionary political views. His great virtue is that in his open expression of ruling-class arrogance and entitlement he makes abundantly clear that the sinews of the capitalist state are unreservedly devoted to countering the influence of the working class on the affairs of the nation and in countering the political influence of all those forces that represent working-class interes

Tories ridiculed over frankly bizarre plans to send undercover cops into bars

THE Tories are facing a backlash over plans to deploy undercover officers in bars and clubs in response to the death of Sarah Everard.  Downing Street said on Monday that it will be taking a series of measures to improve security, including sending plain-clothes officers to patrol night clubs and bars. Centre for Women’s Justice director Harriet Wistrich branded the plans “frankly bizarre” today, especially at a time when women’s trust in the police is low.  “Many women will now be quite rightly asking: ‘But who will protect me from the plain-clothes officer?’” she said. Police were accused of heavy-handed tactics against women at a vigil for Ms Everard, whose body was found last week after she went missing while walking home in south London.

Peace groups warn of widespread resistance following Johnson s decision to build more nukes

DIRECT action could be launched over the government’s “dangerous” decision to increase its cap on nuclear warheads by almost half, campaigners warned today. The integrated review raises the limit on the number of Trident missiles that can be stored from 180 to 260. It signals an end to 30 years of gradual nuclear disarmament in Britain. The 44 per cent increase is also the biggest by any nation since the cold war, according to Beatrice Fihn, executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. Pacifist group Peace Pledge Union warned that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s cap increase will be met by “widespread resistance, including non-violent direct action.”

Labour reveals catalogue of rapists given less prison time than what is proposed for people damaging statutes

A CATALOGUE of rapists who received less time in prisons than the government’s proposed maximum sentence for damaging statues was revealed by Labour today.  The cases include that of John McDonald, who raped a schoolgirl under 13, and John Patrick who raped a vulnerable 13-year-old; both received seven-year sentences.  However, Policing Minister Kit Malthouse has defended the government’s new Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which allows someone attacking a statue to receive up to 10 years in prison, while rape sentences start at five years.  He said the sentence for damaging statues reflects their “emotional value.” Labour’s shadow justice secretary David Lammy called the government’s apparent belief that it is acceptable for some rapists and other attackers of women to get lower sentences than those who damage statues “a disgrace.”
