to begin. what happened as it got to the square has changed drastically. the situation on the ground now is this. the military has said they have authorized the use of deadly force, live ammunition, not to only protect security officials, policemen, members of the army but now they say they will do it to protect any kind of government installation. the muslim brotherhood on the other hand has been sending people to the street, chanting with our blood and our souls we defend islam. that is setting up a very precarious religious war between the muslim brotherhood and largely secular army that could spiral out of control. we may be getting to that on the streets of cairo. as you know, leland, president obama spoke out about the situation in egypt yesterday. has the egyptian army changed any of he its stance since then? reporter: not at all. they seem to be incredibly defiant, they said the president s words were not based on facts and only embolden
camarota, welcome to the second hour of happening now, there are new reports of at least 50 people dead today. members of the muslim brotherhood taking to the streets, promising a day of rage. this is all in response to a bloody crackdown on support user of ousted on supporters of ousted president mohamed morsi, and that has already killed 600 people. washington, d.c., obviously, keeping a very close eye on all of this. jon: national security correspondent jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon, so how is the pentagon reacting, jennifer? reporter: well, secretary of defense chuck hagel had a telephone call with a general yesterday, he has been the administration s diplomatic point man on egypt. the pentagon called off the bright star joint military exercise more slated for next month late last night the egyptian government put out a statement saying that president obama did not have all the facts about what was happening in egypt right now. arwa damon is in cairo live. mona el tahari on the phone. special newsweek correspondent peter binehart. he s the editor of daily beast. and former bush white house spokesman ari fleishman. arwa, can you take us through what happened today and what is to expect on the just announced, friday of anger. reporter: when we compare the situation to yesterday, it was significantly calmer. but that does not mean that this crisis is by any stretch of the imagination over. the streets of cairo were pretty empty throughout the entire day. of course, now there is that curfew in play, state of emergency also of course to be lasting for about a month. you were talking about the attacks on churches there. we ve been hearing various reports that the number is much higher. at least 30 to have been attacked across the country.
fred, i know you ve been out and about, you took some of those photographs at the mosque there of some of those bodies. give us a sense of where you were and what you re seeing. reporter: hi, michael. you re absolutely right. the mosque is actually right behind me. you re right, i was inside that mosque earlier today. and it is one of those places where a lot of those bodies were brought to. now, muslim brotherhood told us as many as 500 bodies were inside that mosque earlier today. when we were arriving we still saw well over 100, and a lot of them were charred, the cloths were all blood-stained. and there were a lot of people in there grieving. you could just tell that the tension in there was building as the time went by. so clearly those people there were grieving, but they were also very, very angry. the sense that you get here on the streets of cairo right now is that, yes, they are a little more quiet obviously than they were yesterday, but it seems as though the muslim brothe
