the very decision to crack down rather than contain i think was quite questionable, quite avoidable and just from what i m hearing from egyptian officials, we just don t hear anything that sounds like a strategy to contain the violence, to end the violence and move forward to a political solution. what would happen if the u.s. ended that billion and a half dollar aid to egypt? it would have limited effect? we have situations where police stations are attacked by rpgs. we ve had masked gunmen on the streets of cairo firing indiscriminately into residence areas. no government will tolerate such a situation. it s true that churches are being attacked but at the same time, churches are not being protected. i think that has to also be part of the conversation and it s important to communicate to the government that they are responsible for what happens moving forward.
