the very decision to crack down rather than contain i think was quite questionable, quite avoidable and just from what i m hearing from egyptian officials, we just don t hear anything that sounds like a strategy to contain the violence, to end the violence and move forward to a political solution. what would happen if the u.s. ended that billion and a half dollar aid to egypt? it would have limited effect? we have situations where police stations are attacked by rpgs. we ve had masked gunmen on the streets of cairo firing indiscriminately into residence areas. no government will tolerate such a situation. it s true that churches are being attacked but at the same time, churches are not being protected. i think that has to also be part of the conversation and it s important to communicate to the government that they are responsible for what happens moving forward.
stay in your homes. stay in your hotels. and they don t want people to be goin out on the street. at the same time, no evacuation order at least officially has been issued as yet. our own jennifer griffin is over at the pentagon. but they are watch can the situation carefully as the developments continue on the streets of cairo. apparently any evacuation would involve the egyptian military, and of course we have our own contingent there that protects the embassy. but so far no evacuation. but you can bets the embassy in cairo is being well secured at the moment give what we are seeing on the right-hand side of the screen. all the protests taking place in egypt. americans being told stay in your hotels. stay in your homes. all non-essential travel should be cancelled right now. megyn: gregg, thank you.
interests to step in. first of all, egypt doesn t have any oil. so there s not a concern that someone would cut off our oil supplies. a situation where u.s. troops, u.s. soldiers, wound up on the streets of cairo firing at demonstrators trying to bring down a repressive government, i don t think that s what we d want or that it s being considered. megyn: earlier on our air, john bolton was saying, say nothing. say nothing until we know more about who is involved and what the factions are. secretary of state clinton said something. but not much. it may be the only time in history where john bolton and the obama administration agree on something take a step back and don t overcommit to either side. megyn: we have the reports about muslim brotherhood s influence, but they re working to confirm it. so far away, over here in the united states, if you don t fool egyptain government and policy, it s hard to know who the united states is rooting
