welcome back. time now for your morning primer, everything you need to know to get your day started. overnight, thousands of people all over the country took to the streets in several major cities protesting a donald trump presidency. while most of the protests were peaceful, a few were marked by flag burning, acts of vandalisms and arrests. president obama will host donald trump at the white house today. ever since trump led the birther movement, questioning the president s u.s. citizenship, the two men have had almost no one-on-one contact. and after a bumpy overnight, the markets rallied yesterday after donald trump s victory. the dow ended up more than 250 points. a search is under way for a gunman who opened fire in downtown seattle last night near a scene from an anti-trump administration. five people were hurt, one man was critically injured.
philly, and new york city, that includes the thousands who filled the streets outside trump tower just a few blocks from here. we have it all covered for you today with the best team in the business. i want to start with nbc s ayman mohyeldin outside trump tower in midtown manhattan. new york, a blue state went with hillary clinton. people are upset. they want to have their voice heard. this is the united states. freedom of speech. what were they doing in the street last night? reporter: yeah, stephanie, in fact, those protests that took place lasted for several hours. caught the folks by surprise. they came from two different parts of the city starting from upper central park area working their way down, columbus circle area, making their way down outside trump tower on fifth avenue. the protesters demands were two-fold, denouncing what they say are the xenophobic, racist policies of donald trump throughout the campaign trail.
