on gerrymandering congressional and state legislator maps, hasn t changed. but the political makeup of the court has, flipping from a democratic two republican majority in november. the impact of this judicial redo could stretch far past the tar heel state, where the 14 congressional districts are evenly split between the parties, even shaping who controls the u.s. united states house of representatives in 2024 and beyond. it s extremely unusual. i think it s possible though that it may become the new norm. if we ve got a purple state like north carolina, where partisanship of a court can flip on a, dime flipped on one election. so, how do we get here? in february 2022, when democrats held up for three majority on the bench, the court declared the gop -controlled legislature s original maps for an extreme partisan gerrymander, that violated the state constitution s guarantee of free elections and must be withdrawn. republican lawmakers argued the court did not have standing to mand
precipice of the roe anniversary, that this is the first time in 50 years, where women do not have the right to make decisions in 12 states where abortion is totally banned under threat of criminal prosecution. and so, i am sitting here at this roe v. wade anniversary thinking that some things are quite chilling, which we have to pay attention to, but some things that are, in fact, heartening. and i think the lawsuit filed in missouri is one of those things. we are seeing states find protections for reproductive rights that did not exist before. so i think it s an interesting lawsuit. they are suing under the state constitution, which is what we have been doing in a lot of places across the country. and they are saying that missouri, basically, has established religion, and that the state constitution s bar against establishing religion means that their abortion ban must fall. it s religious leaders saying, you are that s right. you are bringing religion to the state where none
gerrymandering that this north carolina supreme court struck down because it violated the state constitutional provision requiring free and fair elections. the legislator than countered and filed the suit arguing that the state court has no authority to interpret north carolina state constitution to provide for free and fair elections for north carolina residents. the idea that the legislator, which is a preacher of the state constitution, which is created by the state constitution, isn t bound by the state constitution, is absolutely ludicrous. incredible. let s talk about another case. this one is about a colorado web designer who refuses to work on same sex weddings. do you have a sense of which direction the justices are leaning in that case, because this is a case where it s all about hypotheticals. well, i mean that tells you everything you want to know jonathan. federal courts, including the supreme court, our courts of limited jurisdiction. they re limited to hearing cases
