they got a couple of hours of rest and were back out at sunrise. so what did you find when you guys were out surveying? we found some pretty significant damage. we have an area called goodland that we provide fire service to on the island. an old florida fishing village. people live in tratrailers, and the old florida homes were div stated. they have two large marinas on the island. and one of the marinas the towers and boats in that marina are laid down on the side. significant damage. perhaps one of the most unusual things i ve ever seen, we have a high rise condominium at the very north end of our island. it is right at the marco river, and it s on a path that comes into smokehouse bay. and that condominium, the sea wall failed on it. and as a result the water was
an hour ago. chris? hmm. calm, a relative assessment when you re in a hurricane of course. be safe. very fright nij added by the fact there s so little light. to go through a hurricane in the dark must be so frightening. that s why one of the reasons our hearts and minds are with all those who sheltered in place, many with children and family. very tough to go through. give us some perspective. are many of the areas that are getting hit now and still have to worry about this storm, have been hit recently. hurricane matthew did damage in gainsville, jacksonville in areas surrounding the region you re in. reporter: absolutely. it was impact here. i was actually standing on the ground floor during that storm here at the very same hotel. and i can tell you that the winds then felt like nothing compared to what we have been feeling today. i mean compare tim, yes, there was damage. yes, the sea wall came up and
they need to leave. as you can see, we have lots of people here. some of them huddled down getting ready to leave and some of them look asleep. interestingly, chris, there are at least four people in an rv park here who despite the police telling them they have to leave, they are going to stay put. the police will go back and try to convince them one more time that this is just nuthing to mess around with. never a good idea. listen to the police. kerry, thank you for that. in corpus christi, already, i see what is happening on the water there. already feeling the effects of hurricane harvey, right? yeah, that s right, chris. just in the last hour that we ve been out here along the sea wall here in corpus christi. the intensity of the wind has picked up. it s consistently blowing now very strong. the water here is also beginning to rise. when we came out here about an hour ago, it was just kind of touching along the base there. now, clearly coming over it. starting to splash up agai
this water has encroached and pushed itself closer to the sea wall. as you can see, the sea wall extends through much of the island. not the entire island. once you get down that way to the west of this island, wolf, the sea wall disappears and it s more residential. these homes were originally built 15 to 20 feet off the ground, so that helps with the storm surge. people had been cleaning up everything underneath their homes and that kind of thing. very quiet on that part of the island and those barrier islands are really of great concern, because the bridges that go onto these island as the winds pick up will be shut down and become simply too dangerous to drive on those roadways. that is something we ll be very cognizant of and aware of. you don t want to get caught on those bridges as the worst of those storm winds are coming ashore. as we talked about and can t stress enough, it s really the issue of flooding that we ll see. in fact, some of those forecast models of this hurricane
