BARRIE, ONT. A Circle K in Bradford is the latest Simcoe County franchise to be targeted in an armed robbery. It happened on Saturday morning shortly before 2 a.m. at the convenience store located on Holland Street West, near Simcoe Road. South Simcoe Police say a lone male carrying a large knife left with an undisclosed amount of money. He is described as having a medium build and was wearing a black mask, a hoodie, blue jeans, black shoes, black gloves and black sunglasses. It is the third Circle K to be robbed in Simcoe County in less than two weeks. Two locations in Barrie have also been hit by armed robberies, one on Sunday and another on April 1.
BARRIE, ONT. Forestry experts oversaw a controlled burn across 100 acres of the Tosorontio Tract in Adjala-Tosorontio Saturday. It s the second such burn in the area over the last two years. The aim was to clear out young saplings that could take over and to make way for other vegetation, including oak trees. What this is doing is re-introducing a natural disturbance that s really very important to keep these types of forests diverse and healthy for the long term, says Graeme Davis, a forester with the County of Simcoe. Experts were expected to watch over the fire into the evening until it is out.
BARRIE, ONT. Barrie s waterfront was busy on the first Saturday under the new provincial stay-at-home order. Many people headed out for walks along Centennial Beach or through downtown, taking advantage of the summer-like weather. Most business owners are adhering to instructions to close, but several have also defied those orders and are open. In Midland, Heads Up Hair Design has been open all week, even after its owner received two $750 fines last month. Keely Turner calls staying open a very difficult decision. I had to do a lot of soul-searching to make it, but, at the end of the day, I have to feed my family. I m not going to look at my kids in the eye and explain why I can t feed them.
