the violence began with the protester was often from police who instigated things. that is to say there were protesters who were vie skplent made mistakes. many of them were not from the community or people who explicitly told me they were there to start trouble. they would throw bottles and push things hoping to get the revolution started. all of that aside, i m happy to see people come from out of town. when dogs bite us in birmingham we bleed everywhere. this is a nationwide problem. we need everybody involved. the president of the local naacp called outside protesters bullies today. let me let you hear it. we do not need anyone coming in bullying our community and bullying people who are there just to get justice. when you come into another city
citizens of this city in danger. so that s a conversation we re starting to hear a little bit more about in the wake of this tragedy. let me ask you, as someone who you were in ferguson for multiple trips. and considering the experience and how police responded to what happened there with michael brown and to what we saw now, what s happened in baltimore, how do you see the two? reporter: well i mean obviously there are a lot of stories like this around the nation. probably less a reflection of greater accidence of it. in fact i m sure it s i m sure there are fewer incidents like this today than there were 20 30 40 years ago. definitely an example of there s far more prevalence of video cameras and cell phone video. in terms i did ask the local naacp activist how she viewed this through the perspective of
the mississippi mud was expected to fly today. we had pro-mcdaniel tea party backed poll watchers planning to man the polls. the local naacp chapter feared that would lead to voter intimidation and suppression. what have you seen there on the ground? well, poll workers here at this polling station in a neighborhood center in hattiesburg tell me they have not seen any mcdaniel poll watchers. maybe that s not surprising because there haven t been many african-american voters here. really, the focus of the mcdaniel campaign is on democrats who the cochran campaign is trying to turn out under mississippi s open primary laws, any democrat or independent, so long as they didn t vote in the democratic primary on june the 3rd, is eligible to vote in this race. cochran allies don t expect a huge number of democrats or african-american democrats. and in mississippi, which is totally racially polarized by party, most democrats are
t already there are bills to restrict voting that are working their ways through legislatures in some 19 maps. look at in ohio. a bill to trim early voting moves forward. there is also a movement to end same-day registration and put new limits on absentee ballots. in florida on the state s gulf coast, the commissioners down there have okayed the closing, catch this, of 30 polling places, which amounts to 1/3 of the county s total. the local naacp president said of the shutdowns the more affluent community was left alone. and as far as their polling place, they didn t suffer some kind of closings as poor neighborhoods did. it s no coincidence the right to vote is under assault in two of the most important swing states in the country, especially in presidential election. tim russert, ohio, ohio, ohio, florida, florida, florida. state representative kathleen clyde is in the ohio state assembly. and dale ho is director of the
