It’s May, which means Emmy FYC season is kicking into high gear. Last week I broke the news of Netflix’s and Amazon Prime Video’s plans, and today I also have a first look at HBO and HBO Max’s plans. HBO/HBO Max are leaning heavily on a Drive-In theater experience at the Rose Bowl where last week, I experienced the first Drive-In of the season via Bravo’s “Top Chef.” More on that later in the newsletter.
s should have won an Emmy!” hive rejoice. Justin Theroux is returning to his dramatic side with new Apple TV+ drama,
The Mosquito Coast. It’s based on the 1981 best selling novel of the same name written by his uncle, Paul Theroux. The seven-episode series will follow Allie Fox (Theroux), an idealist and brilliant inventor, who uproots his entire family and goes on the run with them to Mexico because the U.S. government is after him.

The book was first adapted into a movie in 1986 starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren but the Apple TV+ original will narratively navigate from the flick. It also stars Melissa George, Logan Polish, Gabriel Bateman, and Kimberly Elise. The series will make its debut on April 30 with two episodes, followed by a new episode every week. , a new podcast produced by
Rolling Stone and OBB Sound, presented by Google Assistant, and hosted by yours truly. In each episode, we attempt a new method of scaling Peak TV, by pairing a celebrity guest with a series they’ve never seen and showing them only the very first and very last episodes, to see if they can figure out what in the world happened in between.
