No Estonian film shortlisted for Oscars in 2021

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the final candidates in the nine categories at this year s Academy Awards, and while four Estonian films were submitted, none of them have made the final cut. The nine categories are: Documentary Feature, Documentary Short-subject, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (original score), Music (original song), Animates Short Film, Live-Action Short Film, Visual Effects. The Estonian Film Institue submitted Veiko Õunpuu s The Last Ones , German Golub s feature My Dear Corpses , Kerli Kirch Schneider s short feature Virago and Eeva Mägi s short documentary Heart Near Sõrve to the competition.

The Last Ones selected best film of 2020 by Film Journalists Association

Veiko Õunpuu s The Last Ones ( Viimased ) was selected as the best film of 2020 by the Estonian Film Journalists Association and was presented with the Neitsi Maali bronze statue award. The award gives the winner €2,000. Documentaries Heartbeat ( Südamering ) and Fred Jüssi. The Beauty of Being ( Fred Jüssi. Olemise ilu ) and feature movies O2 and Rain were also among the nominees. Veiko Õunpuu, who has won the Neitsi Maali bronze statue award four times has a recognizable style, yet he leaves quite a lot of space for the viewer to fill, chairman of the Film Journalists Association Andrei Liimets said.
