and ohio that left nearly 30 people dead. joining us once again from washington, political reporter for the hill, julia manchester, good to talk to you again, let s discuss the conversations about reconvening the senate. and whether or not it s realistic. after this weekend s attacks. is it realistic, how much of a priority do you think this is? it s possible the senate could reconvene. i don t know if republicans are going to move on that, especially senate majority leader mitch mcconnell, we re hearing sherrod brown, the senator from ohio really push for this, and i think a lot of democrats want to push for legislation on background checks and trying to restrict background checks. i don t know if necessarily republicans are in the position right now to really want to be able to do something about this. unfortunately, although these tragedies are obviously quite big and, you know, have a huge impact on the country, you know, as i said before, i think the national rifle associa
this is why this patch work on the local levels, we just saw the gilroy shooting. new jersey has better gun laws in other states. folks buy their guns in states with lacks laws and go back into the states that has tough laws and do what we saw happen. gavin newsom talked about just this, the governor. we need federal action on this, and not meek action, not small steps that are being dictated by the gun lobby. we need bold steps and actions like gun licensing and more. that s what i m going to be and you know this, reverend. there s thoise of us in communities where hearing gunshots you see memorials on sidewalks and teddy bears, you go to perverse reality where you go to funerals where parents are
different manner. so let me talk to you about this. because you have had a long and storied career. and just, you didn t cover these shootings to this frequency when you were not with this frequency. vanes happened. it was beginning but not the frequency in recent years. so the gun lobby is so strong, right? what keeps them in power? why are they so successful? money. they ve had money. they put their money and political campaigns. and on the issue of gun violence, i m sorry to say this and it sort of catches my throat to say it, because it is, many of our political leaders are bought and paid for by the gun lobby, which is in turn financed by the manufacturers of guns, and ammunition. it s down to money. down to money. you know, this is an issue for the, this has become an electoral issue for the folks in
they put their money into political campaigns. and on the issue of gun violence, i m sorry to say this and it sort of catches my throat to say it because i detest it so, that many of our political leaders are bought and paid for by the gun lobby, which is in turn financed by the manufacturers of guns and ammunition. it s down to money. down to money. you know, this is an issue for the this has become an electoral issue for the folks in the 2020, the candidates, as well as the midterms, do you think the political momentum, where is it swinging on this issue? who does it benefit? well, i wouldn t say momentum. it is too strong of a word. there is a political trend, if you will, in the direction of doing something. doing even the minimum steps of tightening up who can buy a gun and under what circumstances and what kind of guns they can buy, those small things, but the trend line runs in that
market, that he might be arrested, he could be hurt, he could be in jeopardy of the criminal justice system or drug dealers or whatever. but we don t even have to do that. the mass killer doesn t face that risk, he can go wherever he wants. walk into the gun store or the gun show without restrictions. so we need to tighten that up. we re living in america really in the last 35 years, that s the design by the gun lobby. they controlled all the laws, all the gun laws in congress. congress will not budge on anything. they won t hear or let anything get through. so this is this is america designed by the gun lobby. right, i agree, and they re probably circling the wagons right now as we speak at the nra and places like that where they ll think there will be heat for a couple of weeks and it will blow over. our concern is protecting the rights to own a gun. anyway, the mayor and police chief have briefed reporters just a short time ago. let s watch that.
