unfolding tragedy in downtown philadelphia. six people have died after a building under demolition came crashing down. amazingly though, a 61-year-old woman has been been pulled from the rubble after being buried for 13 hours. rescuers say they grabbed the woman s hand as they searched and she squeezed back. she was talking to crews as they worked to free her. with more, now, here s kenneth mullen in philadelphia. reporter: the search-and-rescue efforts turned into recovery as emergency crews pulled more bodies out of the rubble. we can now confirm there are six people who died. one man and five women. it is devastating. and, you know, i am curious to see what went wrong, why it happened. reporter: it s been an all-day operation since the wall of a four-story building under demolition crashed down on to the salvation army thrift store in center city around 10:45 a.m. first responders and good

reporter: screaming for help? we said can you hear us? can you hear us? then we heard others, some over here. we pulled the rubble all of them. we went in tried to help. we will now confirm there are six people who died. one man. five women. we still have approximately 40% of the area to be searched. the 40% is off to the rear of the store. what we call, toward the c-charlie area. we are diligently going through area. taking our time. a little at a time. it is still going to be a while. reporter: hundreds have been working meticulously going through the rubble. they go as deep as the thrift store s basement. they won t stop until they know for sure everyone is accounted for. our hope is that anyone that
samaritans went to work rescuing people who were trapped under the heavy debris. the people in the building you could hear hollering for help. other guys responded. ran up. jumped in. passed me a lady. reporter: the search for more victims went into the evening as portable lights lit the area for backhoe operators who had been removing piles of brick and metal. our hope is that any one that is inside is in a void and we can have a person that a live rescue. if not, we will, we will just take this apart a little bit at a time. reporter: meanwhile, the investigation into the deadly incident has begun, with local state, federal officials on the ground. the city says philadelphia-based company griffin campbell construction had an active permit for the demolition and there were no existing violations. still, people who stopped by to see the site say there are question that need to be answered. i m surprised people are that close to, when they were destroying the other building.
