seat at the table of democracy. other people try to stop them. what s new, what s different is this mass belief in a major lie. we ve not had that before. we don t really know how it is going to play out. there is a point, a key point in your book the fight to vote where you talk about it isn t really the courts, you know, that is the impetus for change. it is people. so what do you see actually making change here? the supreme court is not going to save us. in fact, it heads in the wrong direction. courts throughout the country s history have not been what has expanded the right to vote. it s people on the streets. people voting for candidates. involved in actual partisan politics where the two parties fight it out on these issues. even passing constitutional amendments. there are five constitutional amendments that talk about protecting explicitly the right to vote. this is something we now see
districts, compared to democrats 11 states or 84 congressional districts. democrats have a slim majority in the house, so this redistricting period could have huge implications for who controls the chamber in 2022. joining us now are michael waldman, president of the brennan center for justice at new york university school of law. he s a constitutional lawyer and the author of the fight to vote. also my friend maria teresa kumar, president and ceo of vo ta latino and an msnbc contributor. welcome to both of you. michael, what s the implication here? you look at the census and say, oh, we re diversifying. that should mean more diversifying and better representation, but that s not actually what this necessarily means. well, what we see is that the multiracial diverse country that is in the future is actually here now, and we need a political system that represents america as it is right now. the beginning of the census data
are black voters. we should note those pending voters can vote if they bring the correct documentation to polls. the concern is poll workers might not know that. my guest is the author of the fight to vote. and of course bob and rick back with me. all right, michael, 32% of georgia s population are black, but 70% of these applications that are pending are minority voters. what do you make of this? it s quite a coincidence. or it s not a coincidence. or not. i would say there is an overall problem we see in georgia but we see it across the country. of new laws and new practices to make it harder for people to vote, really for the first time since the jim crow era. and one of the problems is in a place like georgia. you ve got somebody who s the secretary of state in charge of voting system and he stands to benefit from this. so who can stop this?
