truth is it s more complicated than that. in fact, social media can be a two-edged sword for pro- democracy protesters. the author of the net delusion and we spoke with him how governments can turn social media against their opponents. one interesting example where a government actually went to social media web sites to learn more about protesters in iran in 2009 following the big wave of protests there. to identify anyone that they could recognize in the photos. and apparently they arrested, they claim to have arrested 40 people based on the tips they received from the public. journalist david kirkpatrick writes and reports about social media for the daily beast and he is also the author of the facebook effect. the story that is connecting the world. david kirkpatrick joins us tonight from new york.
developed post pregnancy complications and died. so is facebook now where reporters turn for personal information that perhaps we once all thought of as private? joining us now here in washington is ian shapira, likely enterprise reporter for the washington post who wrote the story and in new york, david kirkpatrick, for the daily beast and author of the book, the facebook effect. you had permission to tell the story. how did you feel about calling shanea s husband and asking him? i was nervous. i called jeff and his mom and spoke with jeff s parents, as well. and i got permission from them. they were happy to do it. the story evolved over time. initially wanted to do a profile of shana using the status updates and facebook along with using the graphic of her updates and page. but over time, we decided to only stick with the graphic and tell the story that way. i want to come back to that. david kirkpatrick, does this symbolize how facebook, this phenomenon that has nearly 60
stand-in for the audience. i did things like that, that don t at all change our perception of the characters or the events or the trajectory of the story. let me pick up in three instances i changed people s names. i can understand that. let me pick up on the business about the depositions because david kirkpatrick who wrote the facebook effect critiqued the film and says some of the snide putdowns were invented, some of them not. he also says there s no evidence that mark zuckerberg had sex in a bathroom stall which you had some fun with. um-hum. i ll take the deposition room scenes first. i have first of all i don t want to be coy or cagey about this but a lot of the research that i did and it falls into three categories, available research, you can go online and get mark zuckerberg s own blog from that night that gets dram tized at the beginning of the movie, then cartons and cartons of legal documents that i had specialists, lawyers and
