The directors of nine of the animated films under consideration for Academy Award nominations will discuss their craft in a free online PreVIEW event Friday, March 5, beginning at 10 a.m. PT.
“Animated Features Oscar Contenders – A Directors’ Discussion,” presented by the VIEW Conference, features Glen Keane (“Over the Moon”); Pete Docter and Kemp Powers (“Soul”), Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart (“Wolfwalkers”), Joel Crawford (“The Croods: A New Age”), Walt Dohrn (“Trolls World Tour”), Kris Pearn (“The Willoughbys”), Dan Scanlon (“Onward”), Gitanjali Rao (“Bombay Rose”), and Will Becher and Richard Phelan (“A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon”).

In a sign of optimism, Sony Pictures plans to release “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” on the big screen earlier than anticipated.
The animated sequel, which was originally scheduled for June, will now arrive in movie theaters on May 14.

Though the U.S. box office has been slow to return amid the pandemic, films geared toward family audiences have been among the most commercially successful. “Tom and Jerry,” an animated kids movie from Warner Bros., debuted to $14 million last weekend, ranking as the second-best opening of the coronavirus era. Universal’s “The Croods: A New Age” has also been a popular draw, generating $52 million to date. Disney is unveiling “Raya and the Last Dragon,” a cartooned fantasy adventure, in theaters and on Disney Plus for a premium price on March 5.

Tom & Jerry. While the film is also available to stream on HBO Max for the next 31 days, it still managed to bring in $13.7 million in North American ticket sales.

New York City Movie Theaters Can Reopen at Limited Capacity, Gov. Cuomo Says

After nearly a year of closures, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has given movie theaters in New York City permission to reopen at limited capacity starting on March 5.
During his daily press briefing, the Empire State leader said cinemas in the city will be permitted to operate at 25% capacity, with no more than 50 people. Moreover, other safety measures such as masks, social distancing and heightened sanitizing measures will be required. Last October, New York venues outside of the city were allowed to reopen with similar restrictions.
