a couple of vehicles there. the l.a. freeways. according to the california highway patrol s recent statistics, every month brings an average 3,000 accidents here and some 100 high speed chases. but no one s ready for this. february 9th, 2015. downtown l.a. news choppers are on the scene after police spot a toyota camry driving erratically. they run the plates and discover the car is stolen. when the suspect won t pull over, the chase is on. for local nbc anchor-reporter robert curvasic, it looks like a familiar sight at first. l.a. is the car chase capital of the world, so we ve seen at all. but there s soon something different about this one.
rolling, the chase is on. he thinks we re trailing a prostitute and her john. and he s making sure to keep his distance so we don t get spotted. i try not to stay in their rear-view mirror if we can. the red car turns right, and we follow on a parallel street. he catches them at the next traffic light. and as we get close enough, bates has safety on his mind. the very first thing i want to record either visually or audio is the tag. and that way if something was to happen, i was to get hurt, they were to hurt somebody else, whatever, i have the tag number so that the driver can be identified later. as we trail this possible prostitute and her john, bates explains what he s feeling. there s certainly a rush that s involved in this. some people make the mistake, and they think, oh, catching people out having public sex, there must be some sort of a sexual rush or perversion to it. you don t have to spend 20 or 30
on the scene and the employee gives him the burglar s information. other witnesses give him information about the burglar s escape route. they said he was last seen eastbound from the location. i was looking off that way in the distance and i saw a man dive into the grass and bushes in that area. toland orders darnell to stop running but he doesn t. and now, the chase is on. i was chasing after the suspect here through the yard. we both fell down. i was attempting to pepper spray him. at one point i finally did pepper spray him successfully. we ended up over here by the front door, basically, at which time he was finally taken into custody and taken to the ground. he initially denies everything. but allen darnell eventually pleads guilty to burglary charges and is given five years probation. coming up next, a robbery almost too silly to be believed. the girl i was training looks over and asks me, is this for real?
