element lewen davis that didn t so obviously my taste diverges. but it was a strong year, and there were a lot of movies, and this list is always different every year, having to do with the calendar of releases. almost everything that has dominated these nominations came out in the last three months of 2013. so the butler for example, which looked very strong in august may have come out too soon? it s funny that voters should be unable to remember something that happened in june, july or august, but this seems to be the case. everything that came out in november and december and october has kind of stayed in there just dominating the field. including gravity all the way to warm front of wall street. . tony scott, come in when oscars are over. we ll see how wrong i was. we both were.
were ten there were ten really great movies. i think there s a couple we can see almost locks this morning. i think these movies will be nominated. i m talking 12 years a slave, i m talking american hustle, i m talking gravity. there are a couple that could be in the running this morning. that is the butler and blue jasmine. the butler is kind of a wild card. it s been a critical darling, but the buzz for it fell off the radar a little bit. so we ll see what happens this morning. let s take through the acting categories. what about best actress? reporter: well, you know, this category for me, i think,
that, abby. that is one frightening baby. all right, turning now to the glitz and glamour of hollywood. the nominees were announced this morning for the 86th annual academy awards. american hustle and gravity lead the pack with ten nominations each, including best picture, best director, and best actress. 12 years a slave followed closely behind with nine nominations, but at this early stage, at least, it seems to be the critics pick. i hear toure has maps or something like that. really? really? but i digress. really? that s relevant. to the surprise of some, oprah winfrey and the butler were completely shut out. so who s walking away with the gold statue? i cannot wait to hear toure s predictions for this year. but the ones i m most excited about are best actor and best actresses, in particular, matthew mcconaughey, who i never expected to be on this list. someone i grew up watching. all of my favorite chick flicks,
a going on. leo, i would have to say, gave a phenomenal perfect form answer. riveted from beginning to end. you mentioned it was your favorite movie. yes. what do you say about my taste? a big naked party. well, when i think of big naked parties, i do think of you, michelle turner. you know what, i m going to claim that because i thought the movie was really good. i loved scorsese s dregging style. it was fast-paced and frantic and manic. but it held from you beginning to end. it is a movie, two hours and 59 minutes of real movie time. i also thought that jonah hill did his best work in this movie. he got a nomination this morning as well. i really thought it was very well done and very good film. there were a couple of omissions that i thought were kind of whoa, i thought oprah may get a nomination this morning. the academy did not recognize her for her work in the butler. she has been one of the critical
what was your take away? i m devastated saving mr. banks did not get nominated and emma thompson, we love her. why do you suppose that movie was left out? the butler was left out too right? it was a strong category. there s a 10th spot. complicated way this is voted. price water house people had various methods in which they have equations. for some reason it slipped through. it s really disappointing. tom hanks starred in saving mr. banks and a lot of people thought he would be nominated for that movie. he was nominated but not that movie. that s right. i thought he was not quite as strong. he was much better in captain phillips. i didn t see walt disney as i was seeing tom hanks.
