for generations, america s combat warriors lived and died by one credo, leave no man behind but that vow had to be abandoned in one of the deadliest battles of world war ii. today, u.s. marines are back in tarawa in the south pacific. they are searches for the remains of their comrades left behind. this seems to be an intact, undisturbed zone. reporter: archaeologist it gregory fox analyzing dirt as military service men dig, searching for the remains of marines who died in the battle of tarawa more than 65 years ago. this is the first of six sites to be excavated. they believe more than 100 marines could be found during this mission. if we run into a row of missing individuals that were buried, that s fantastic.
