Energy giant Shell's announcement that it will begin blasting the seafloor on the unspoilt Wild Coast in search of gas and oil deposits has environmentalists, businesses and Eastern Cape residents up in arms.
Coastal communities protest against Karpowerships, offshore oil and gas drilling

Cape Town - Coastal communities recently gathered at various beaches to celebrate World Oceans Day and also to protest against the pollution and destructive consequences that industrial developments have on oceans and marine life.
Saldanha Bay Coastal Links, Langebaan Coastal links, Save Langebaan Lagoon, Green Connection and the small-scale fishing community gathered at Friday Island Beach and Saldanha Beach to protest against Karpowerships SA (KPSA), Turkish Karpowerships, and proposed offshore oil and gas drilling along South Africa’s coast.
KPSA was granted preferred bidder status earlier this year for three projects fuelled by liquefied natural gas to provide 1 220 megawatts of electricity in South Africa over 20 years. The projects will be located at the ports of Coega, Saldanha and Richards bay.

Spokesperson Phumla Williams said the Cabinet approval of the appointment of Becker and three others would be subject to the verification of qualifications and the relevant clearance……
Last year in response to concerns raised by the KAA, the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) and other groups, department spokesperson Thandiwe Maimane said Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe had initiated a comprehensive consultative process with Nedlac and Sanco to identify suitable candidates.

The others appointed are attorney Vuyiswa Miya, National Union of Miners energy sector co-ordinator Khangela Baloyi and a former special adviser to previous Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson, Allan Taylor.
