then i frankly fear for the future of this country. joining us now with more on the new material from the select committee, sara murray. what more did we learn about hope hicks? you get a sense of how much she and other aides stress were under. in these messages, hope hicks is texting with ivanka trump s chief of staff at the time. she says, in one day, he ended every future opportunity. that doesn t include speaking engagements at the local proud boys chapter. she said, this made us all unemployable, like, untouchable. god, i m so fing mad. and this is really reflective of their text chain, where they re talking about what was unfolding on january 6th and how angry they were with what had just laid out, anderson. it is remarkable. they re sitting there in the white house watching the capitol being attacked, and they re worrying about their future job
people voting was actually evidence of people who died after legally casting their ballots. they put it in writing. i don t think this makes a particularly strong case. when trump started trying to stay in office by getting fake electors there was this text chain among communication staff and lawyers about how this strategy was impossible to defend. quote, it s a crazy play so i m not sure who wants to put their name on it. another white house official described this as, quote, certifying illegal votes, another official said, they can t anonymously stand behind this garbage. another one said i can t stand by it from the looks of it, neither can any of you. it s one thing to know that trump s advisers were, you know, skeptical of all the ways he was trying to stay in power illegally, it s another thing to see how they talked to each other about it in realtime. talking about how utterly indefensible it was and how they
insurrectionist members of congress will find themselves elevated to positions of power when republicans retake control of the chamber in january. and joining me now is hunter walker, one of the investigative reporters for talking points memo who reviewed the texts to mark meadows. hunter, it is good to see you. let s go into this because let me read you one text. this is a text to mark meadows on january 5th, right before the insurrection. and this is from representative rick allen of georgia. mark, thought the president might want to tweet this. i will send you the text chain between me and raffensperger. bottom line, dominion machines down in many polling places in the county. this should give the president the ammo he needs to go after raffensperger. long lines and machines down, been there, done that. but it feels like rick allen s text, i have a bunch of them here, they speak to a kind of like conspiracy theory that he seems like he and others believed that god was involved,
there was a text chain that said, look, from the perspective of your donors, we don t really want to see the president or even the vice president or anyone, what people will respond to is secretary buttigieg. that s interesting. yeah, and for the vice president, there s the cost issue. there s a cost issue. and that s a part of this too. there are things about her there s a much bigger spotlight on her that comes with benefits and things that are negatives too. one of the things that she has to deal with, she lands with a footprint on air force two that is huge with the secret service and with the police and we don t usually think about that. but that is something that needs to be covered by the campaigns. jim clyburn, the whip for the democrats said to me that when he had her come to south carolina in june, he had to help cover the costs of bringing her there. that s interesting. isaac dovere.
and asked for those records among a larger, much larger category of records of that day and that attack and the idea that all of these text messages save one text chain would be lost or destroyed or that the secret service could somehow maintain as they claimed publicly that nothing relevant to our investigation was lost. how would they know if those records were destroyed? so suffice to say we don t have adequate answers yet from the agency and we are determined to get them. we also want to find out if there is anyway to recover what was deleted from the devices and we will ultimately i m sure be reporting to the public what we learn. merrick garland says no person is above the law so your committee finds that trump broke the law, right? will it ask the attorney general to do something about it?
