Paxton is one of three state officials to be impeached in Texas history. He will be immediately suspended from office as the Texas Senate conducts a trial.
The Texas House is expected to begin debate on the proposed impeachment of Paxton at 1 p.m. May 27. The attorney general has been accused of multiple crimes during his time in office.
After a monthslong investigation, lawyers accused Paxton of committing multiple crimes while in office, including securities fraud and misuse of official information.
Gov. Greg Abbott has said he will sign Senate Bill 14 into law. The ACLU of Texas and other pro-LBGTQ+ organizations vowed to sue the state over the ban.
