Celebrating Easter is an annual event. However, the Newcastle Knights didn’t get to celebrate it happily after going down in consecutive weeks at home, this time to St George Illawarra Dragons 22-13.
This was an unfortunate loss for our team but not as unfortunate as losing three players – Mitchell Pearce, Tex Hoy and Kurt Mann. Despite great wins in the hi-vis jersey, many of us are thinking it’s cursed. With the luck we have had with injuries, it really sucks.
St George Illawarra are a long way from where coach Anthony Griffin wants them to be, but he was pleased with their resolve and resilience in beating a bashed-up Newcastle on Sunday.
Dismissed as wooden-spoon candidates by many punters and pundits during the pre-season, the Dragons posted their third straight win after victories over the Cowboys and Sea Eagles in the previous two weeks to be sitting sixth heading into next Sunday’s game against Parramatta.
Griffin acknowledged Newcastle’s crippling injury toll, which included losing Mitchell Pearce (pectoral muscle), Kurt Mann (concussion) and Tex Hoy (hamstring) on Sunday, but the Dragons were without Ben Hunt and Jack Bird and lost Cameron McInnes before the season kicked off.

Teenager Sam Walker starred in his highly anticipated NRL debut as the Sydney Roosters passed their first test without Luke Keary with a 32-12 win over the Warriors.
In the earlier game on Easter Sunday, the Dragons downed the Knights, as Newcastle s injury toll added some high-profile names.
In his first game since being labelled the Roosters replacement for retired star Cooper Cronk, Walker set up a try and looked composed in the win.

Adam O’Brien will struggle to name 21 healthy Knights to face Gold Coast next Saturday after losing playmakers Mitchell Pearce, Kurt Mann and Tex Hoy to injury in a bruising 22-13 loss to St George Illawarra at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.
Pearce, who played his 300th NRL game seven days earlier, could be sidelined for several months after leaving the field in tears in the 25th minute suffering a suspected torn pectoral muscle.
Hoy is expected to miss up to four games with a torn hamstring and Mann was heavily concussed and is unlikely to play against the Titans.
