One neighbor telling me they take precautions every year to make sure the fire doesnt reach homes and it worked. Tonight a dark quiet neighborhood recovering from a ferocious afternoon. All the sudden the wind picked up and took the fire crazy. Flames tearing through the field after 4 00 p. M. Karen in the yellow started spraying the brush in front of her home. Started getting close to the houses whoever wasnt home we took their hose and started watering everywhere we can. It was scarey. Boo five acres burning, the street working as a buffer. We started calling neighbors to make sure that they know the house could be on fire shortly. The husband was piloting the plane which witnesses said appeared to have trouble trying to land, missed the runway and then hit the median on the freeway before coming to rest on its belly. So again, thats some of the video from before and right after the crash there. Traffic jammed up at the mccarthur boulevard exit. This was southbound by the airport there. Backups for miles and miles. And chris, as you mentioned, it is a holiday weekend, people trying to get out of town. Considering how many cars there were on the 405, it was a miracle no cars were actually hit. As chris mentioned, the plane smashing into a median and ending up belly up right on the highway there. Just off north capital avenue, a few blocks from mayberry road. Katy marzullo joins us there live after speaking with homeowners. Katy . Reporter matt, ama, im standing near the homes behind me so you can feel how close this fire was to all these homes. My photographer is going to turn around here and show you just how close the flames burned in this direction towards the homes. You can see crews still here on the scene, going around putting out hot spots. Weve been watching them in the last few minutes, break down larger branches of the trees that are smoldering at the base. The Fire Department said this fire is not contained, but crews have been able to stop the forward progression of the fire. And theyre not calling out any more crews. At this point, they dont have an estimate on the acreage, and thats in part due to the fact that the area is densely populated. But despite that, they tell me no homes had to be evacuated. Damaging property. Another came close to homes at cleariew and ever sol in north san jose. They were able to stop the fire from growing but not before coming within striking distance of several homes. Reporter the fir captain on scene tells me it burned about five acres. You can see whats left of an open field. Those acres way too close to home for people who live in the neighborhood here. They didnt even wait for the Fire Department after calling 911. They grabbed their garden hoses. Grabbed everybodys hoses because we know there are other fires apparently around here. You say scary, yes. I just hope nobodys home would burn and you never knew where it was going. We call them a few times to come home and it started on the other side, other neighbors houses. So very scary. The Fire Department tells me no homes had to be evacuated but the Wildlife Center did have to be evacuated. The executive director tells me they moved nearly 500 animals to safety.
