Kenya’s finance minister recently outlined the country’s spending plans in what was the final budget statement of president Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration. Ukur Yatani made several claims in his speech, many of which resembled a scorecard of Kenyatta’s tenure. The president will step down after the August 2022 elections, having been in office since 2013.
The frontrunners in Kenya’s August 2022 presidential election recently publicised their agendas to an international audience, making a beeline for Britain’s Chatham House. On 16 March former Kenyan prime minister Raila Odinga spoke at the thinktank in London, just a week after deputy president William Ruto.
On 7 March 2022 Kenyan deputy president William Ruto returned to Chatham House, the British think tank, to set out his agenda should he be elected president in the August general election. Ruto outlined his development priorities and answered questions from the audience, some about his record in office. He has been the country’s second in command since 2013.
