Both the Minnesota Golden Gophers mens and women’s track and field teams brought home third place finishes at the Big Ten Championships this weekend. Minnesota won seven individual event Big Ten Championships over the three day competition as well!
Minnesota kicked off action on Friday by winning a pair of individual event championships. Kostas Zaltos got the Gopher men off to a great start by winning the hammer throw with a career best toss of 69.98 meters. now the second best throw in program history. The Gophers added two more point scoring performances in the event with Phillipe Barnett in fourth place and Kaleb Siekmeier in seventh. Bethany Hasz continued her amazing 2021 by adding an outdoor Big Ten title to her pile of hardware in the indoor events. Hasz won the women’s 10,000 meter run in her first ever time competing in the event in a time of 33:30.04. Tess Keyzers added a second place finish in the women’s hammer throw with a car
Whitecaps win season opener over Boston Pride

The Minnesota Whitecaps opened their NWHL season with a 2-1 victory over the Boston Pride on Saturday in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Boston was the team that rolled to a 24-1 record last season and was going to be the Whitecaps opponent in the championship game for the Isobel Cup before the coronavirus pandemic arrived in March. So this game mattered more than usual for both sides.
Amanda Leveille made 36 saves for the Whitecaps, and defenseman Winny Brodt Brown broke a 1-1 tie with a goal at 11 minutes, 59 seconds of the second period.
Gophers wrestlers win two dual meets against Maryland, Michigan State

The No. 14 Gophers wrestling team easily won two dual matches on Saturday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich.
In the first, Minnesota (2-1 overall/Big Ten) crushed Maryland 48-0 for its most one-sided victory since 1979, when the Gophers beat Purdue 51-0. No. 1-ranked heavyweight Gable Steveson got the final six points on a pin in 13 seconds, tying the program record.
The Gophers won the first seven matches in their second dual against host Michigan State, ranked No. 17, and won 28-6.
