During trying times, people look for moments of communal relief. That was true for inmates of a foreboding prison located in the heart of Philadelphia since the 19th century, and it’s true for countless folks today given the current state of the world.
It’s remarkably fitting then that the landmark Eastern State Penitentiary is set to launch its Fair Chance Beer Garden in the same spot on its grounds where a baseball diamond used to offer moments of relief for prisoners.
“The baseball diamond was always a place for people to let off a little bit of steam and to connect with one another and spend time with one another, said Eastern State Penitentiary senior vice president Sean Kelley. And (it was for) just being with one another and escaping the realities of the difficult circumstance of incarceration, even if just for an hour or two.”
