Corporations, families, friends, and community groups are eligible to compete in the event scheduled April 11, 6 p.m. at the State Street Channel Center in Boston. Proceeds will benefit the non-profit's adult basic education programs.
Valentina Ramos, an immigrant from Colombia who goes to Bunker Hill Community College, received the first Tom Brunnick Memorial Scholarship, which honors an Irish immigrant, from First Literacy.
For the past 30 years, First Literacy has awarded scholarships to adult learners who have completed basic education or English language programs across the state and are continuing on to community college or vocational training, said Terry Witherell, the organization’s executive director.
This year’s bee was held in person at the State Street Channel Center, following two years of the competition being held virtually, First Literacy, a Boston-based nonprofit which hosts the bee, said in a statement.
