The preamble to the U. S. Constitution lifts up the ideal of “domestic tranquility.
In the best of times, peace and good will at home takes a lot of hard work from an inspired Congress and a responsive populous! But we have learned that unexpected challenges to tranquility are always just around the corner.
For example, the disastrous power outage in Texas; political unrest (Jan. 6 at our national Capitol); the tragic pandemic; and the poignant cry for racial justice - all of these disrupt our domestic tranquility.
I like a government for the people!

I like farmers, a lot.
Innovative ways to support their work and the environment are good for all. In 1985, the government began paying farmers to set aside some of their cropland from production in order to protect the environment and to renew the soil. It’s called the Conservation Reserve Program. Good idea!
So, I’m thinking, in moments of financial crisis, why can’t the government (perhaps local) offer qualified, productive, hard working families a “crisis grant” as protection from severe stress leading to possible foreclosure on their home, divorce or serious illnesses, such as alcoholism, heart disorders, depression, etc.? We could call this family safety net the Crisis Stress Intervention Program.
Letter to the Editor: America s identity crisis
How Americans respond to these crises (and relate to our historic allies around the world) will embolden the Statue of Liberty and reestablish our identity as the leader of the free world for generations to come.

Our identity as a unique, open and free democratic republic is on the ropes. Who is America?
After a tumultuous election cycle, wide awake leadership is needed. Our way of life is hurting: a deadly worldwide pandemic (indifferent to a divided America), ecological degradation, systemic racism, unemployment and widespread economic disparity.
Reader Opinion: America’s identity crisis
How Americans courageously respond to these internal crises (and relate to our historic allies around the world) will embolden the Statue of Liberty and reestablish our identity as the leader of the free world for generations to come.

Elected leaders must set a timely course of action. But our citizenry’s determined spirit will make the difference! If you are not part of the solution, you may be part of the problem. Washington cannot simply bail us out.
