genius and putin has called the president bright. the question this morning, though, is the relationship souring even against even after mutual admiration of the two in the past week because this morning, vladimir putin is slamming america s national security strategy as aggressive. this comes after trump called russia a rival power earlier this week, but hesitated from going further in his public statements. our senior international correspondent frederik pleitgen joins us with more. the two leaders had the phone call within the last ten days or so, mutual admiration shared, and now this. what sparked vladimir putin to say this? that s a very good question, poppy, and certainly something that people here are asking as well. as you said they had that mutual admiration, heaping praise on one another last week, with the russian president even thanking president trump for the cia helping to give russia information to prevent a terror attack in st. petersburg, but really just a couple
security issue of the year. we have an election coming up in 2018. it is astounding to me that there wasn t a more fullsome discussion of this and that the president didn t at least address it yesterday. he had a great segue, talking about russia as a rival power. rather than bring this up, which would have been the right place to do it, he praises them for the cooperation we had, you know, disrupting a terror attack in st. petersburg. this isn t a mystery. he doesn t talk about russian interference because he thinks it s bad for him and delegitimizes his win, period. he doesn t hear it any other way. fine. then something else happens in the speech yesterday. he makes a very interesting reference to something he seems to ignore on a regular basis. history. let s play it. a nation that does not protect prosperity at home cannot protect its interests abroad. a nation that is not prepared to win a war is a nation not
terrorists to gain control of vast parts of territory all across the middle east. the president vowed to do things heavenly, starting with the renewal of american military strength. a nation that is not prepared to enact a war is a nation not capable of preventing a war. weakness is the surest path to conflict. the president singled out china and russia, rival nations seeking to erode american power and security but said he s open to cooperation. this morning rush out put out a statement praising president trump and the cia for helping thwart a terror attack in st. petersburg. vladimir putin saint donald trump for the informatio information. they were able to apprehend the terrorists. no loss of life.
