Transport Minister Andrew Constance pushed for his top bureaucrat to be sacked after his department did not follow an instruction to clear all trees within 40 metres of either side of all major highways in NSW.
Mr Constance issued a ministerial direction to then-Transport for NSW secretary Rodd Staples directing his department to carry out the mass land clearing of millions of trees along “all state managed highways” in February 2020, after the Black Summer bushfires.

Mr Staples was fired as Transport for NSW secretary without reason in November, six weeks after a positive performance review with the Premier, taking with him a severance package of up to $830,000.
