At the business end of this century things have gone to pot altogether, if Garth Davis’s moody dystopian drama is predicting things right. By the late 2100s, global warming has turned the prairies of midwestern America into parched wastelands where scarcely a tree can grow, and population numbers have plummeted. Intensely connected couple Henrietta (Saoirse Ronan) and Junior (Paul Mescal) live in the midst of all this desolation, in a sagging clapboard house that’s been in his family for generations. As meat and Chardonnay appear to be plentiful, they rattle along well enough, pausing from their languorous lovemaking to stare out their window at the rainless windstorms by which the region is now afflicted.
