Run for Excellence returns to Houma after cancelling last year due to COVID

After a one-year hiatus because of the pandemic, one of the area’s most popular events is back.  The Terrebonne General Medical Center Sports Institute Terrebonne Foundation for Academic Excellence 5K run and walk is set for 6 p.m. Saturday in downtown Houma.  The race is a major money maker for the foundation, a local group that gives grants to classroom teachers in Terrebonne Parish.     TFAE is celebrating its 30th year and the race is in its 20th year. The group has awarded nearly $1.25 million in grants to teachers since its beginning in 1991.  There will be an after party with music provided by Mike Levron Productions, food and drinks in the Hancock Whitney Bank parking lot, 7910 W Main St. But instead of a food fest like in previous years, participants will receive a coupon book from over 40 businesses, restaurants, bars and boutiques worth over $150.

Terrebonne Foundation for Academic Excellence has a new director The Courier and Daily Comet Ashlee Champagne Barahona was named to the post after a search by the group s executive board. Barahona joins the foundation after 10-years of work with the Houma-based United Way for South Louisiana. She has extensive knowledge in marketing, public relations, leadership, business development and fundraising, the board said in a news release. Barahona also served on Leadership Terrebonne’s Executive Board from 2010 to 2015. “I am a proud public-school graduate and lifelong resident of Terrebonne Parish, Barahona said. I am privileged to have worked alongside hundreds of local servant leaders in our community in my professional career. Together, we are stronger, together we make bigger impacts, and it is in this spirit that I begin my work at the foundation.

Nominate a Terrebonne public high school graduate for public service award The Courier and Daily Comet The Terrebonne Foundation for Academic Excellence is seeking nominations from the community of an individual who is recognized for vision and excellence in their chosen career field or other endeavors. The James J. Buquet Jr. Award of Distinction is presented to a Terrebonne Parish public high school graduate who has provided service unselfishly to his or her community, state, nation or world. A nomination form can be found at tfae.org/what-s-new or can be requested by emailing ashlee@tfae.org. Deadline to turn in nomination forms is Feb. 12.

Here s your chance to recognize a Terrebonne volunteer Nominate someone for The Courier s annual Terrebonne s Most Useful Citizen Award. Know a volunteer who has gone above and beyond the norm to make Terrebonne Parish a better place? Nominate him or her for The Courier’s 2020 Terrebonne’s Most Useful Citizen Award. The Courier has given the award every year since 1946 to recognize Terrebonne residents who put in extraordinary time, talent and effort to improve their community. The newspaper solicits nominations from the community, and the recipient is selected by a panel of anonymous judges. Deadline to submit nominations is Dec. 28.
