Paralympic champion swimmer wins prestigious Spanish prize

Paralympic champion swimmer Teresa Perales has won Spain's annual Princess of Asturias award for sports. The judges said on announcing the prize Wednesday that the Spanish athlete had become “an example for millions of disabled people of how to overcome difficulties and an icon of international paralympics.” Former winners include American Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn and Formula One racing driver Michael Schumacher.

A world and Paralympic swimming champion has won a prestigious Spanish prize. Spain s own Teresa Perales has won Spain’s annual Princess of Asturias award for sports. On announcing the prize Wednesday, the judges who awarded her said that the Spanish athlete had become “an example for millions of disabled people of how to overcome difficulties and an icon of international paralympics.” Perales, 45, lost the use of her legs at 19 due to neuropathy became a swimmer when she could not do karate. She has won numerous medals at the Paralympic Games over the past two decades, and is a motivational speaker and physiotherapist.

Italy hopeful of gold rush in third leg of World Para Swimming World Series

Friday, 16 April 2021 Italy will be hopeful of getting among the medals on home water during the third leg of the World Para Swimming World Series, scheduled to begin in Lignano Sabbiadoro tomorrow. In total, 141 athletes from 27 countries are scheduled to line-up in 17 races behind closed doors at the Bella Italia Village Sports Complex. World champions Carlotta Gilli, Simone Barlaam, Arianna Talamona and Federico Morlacchi form part of a 24-strong Italian squad, some of whom will be competing in their first competition for more than a year. The 2020 edition of the World Series round in Lignano was cancelled at the last minute as coronavirus started to spread around the world.
