ATHENS-“It was the best one yet.”
That’s how Wildwood Deli Owner and Operator Matthew Fisher described this year’s Sippin’ Cider. His Deli won this year’s coveted Cider Cup. Hundreds of people participated in this year’s festival and voted online. The Warten House B&B was a close runner-up.
Athens Main Street Executive Director Tere Richardson said, “It was a picture-perfect evening on the Square for one of the most anticipated events of the year. I would like to acknowledge all the participants. The patrons truly were treated to outstanding cider recipes this year.”

Athens Main Street was given $11,000 to help fund family-friendly holiday events like the Christmas Open House and Sippin Cider.
âFor our local merchants, holiday sales constitute 40 percent of their yearly revenue, and these (holiday) activities also encourage people to shop and eat local while they are enjoying the events downtown,â Athens Main Street Director Tere Richardson wrote in her application.
The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives was granted $3,000.
âThe museum develops and maintains the preservation of archives and artifacts that exemplify the achievements and memories of armed forces veterans,â Hollman said. âThe museum also offers programs for veterans and the public, such as patriotic programs, Coffee Call, etc.â

ATHENS – Visitors to downtown Athens have a new opportunity to enjoy outdoor dining thanks to new tables on the courthouse lawn.
This past summer, Athens City Schools loaned Athens Main Street tables to encourage outdoor dining. The tables were a huge success that the Limestone County Commission has agreed to make them a permanent feature of downtown.
Athens Main Street would like to thank the sponsors of the five tables which include the City of Athens, The Ming Family, Limestone County Commission, Athens State University Foundation, and RheAnna King. King sponsored a table in honor of her father that died this year, Ros Richardson.
The Tennessee Valley Authority recently announced a second round of Cares funding for non-profit agencies. TVA partnered with local power companies like Athens Utilities to provide these funds to support local initiatives that benefit communities.
For this second round, TVA allocated $20,000 for Limestone County, and Athens Utilities allocated $20,000 from the Electric Department’s marketing budget for a total of $40,000. TVA and Athens Utilities also allocated $20,000 each during the first round of TVA Cares funding distributed in May.
“These agencies make a difference in the lives of our citizens, and I am glad we can join TVA in supporting their work,” Athens Electric Department Manager Blair Davis said.
